Gotta make it into 1.7a release. Select the contentlet tab and click "new" (not the flyout). it will give you a portlet error.

Clicking "new" under the contentlet tab give you a portal exception
It needs to go to the content edit screen with an inode of zero and the user can select the content type they would like to add.
